What Does Flying a Kite Have to do with God?

January 16, 2012 by Dolly Lee | Leave a Comment

Last fall, we spent a glorious afternoon at the beach.  It was a windy blustery day.  Unlike previous attempts when we would run-coax the kite into the sky before it quick crashed, today it flew and flew with barely any effort from us.

The kite danced and swayed with the amiable wind across the azure blue sky.  We smiled in surprised delight.

After awhile, our girl declared she no longer wanted to hold onto the kite's string.  But the kite wasn't done with its waltz, and its partner showed no signs of tiring.

What to do?

My husband anchored the kite to his backpack.

Our girl was happy and free to dig in the sand.  The kite joyfully continued swirling with the wind.  And I had an epiphany.

  • "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit, for apart from Me, you can do nothing." John 15:5 NASB

If you want to fly like that kite, you need to follow the Holy Spirit's movement in your heart and you must remain connected to Me (Your true source of life).

I opened my blog today, and what was the quote for today (which was entered weeks earlier):

  • "The main thing about Christianity is not the work we do, but the relationship we maintain and the atmosphere produced by that relationship.  That is all God asks us to look after, and it is the one thing that is being continually assailed."  Oswald Chambers, My Utmost For His Highest, Aug. 4 Reading

Bam!  Right between the eyes.  Since I recently joined Twitter, it is easy to be distracted by all the wonderful links.

Without Him, I cannot love others well, or write what stirs in my heart.  The main thing must be my relationship with God if I want to soar like that kite.
